I’ve been working in IT for the last 10 years or so. At various times, I’ve been a software engineer, a consultant, and worked in IT operations. In early 2006, I came up with a couple of inventions and decided to see if they were patentable (I work in an IT company, so any rights to the invention goes to my employer). Unfortunately there wasn’t anyone around me who was familiar with the patent process. So I went on a crash course to learn everything about patents and inventions. After pouring through a ton of material, I finally began to make sense of it.
I’m now sharing what I know because I think we need to encourage innovation by making it easier to patent stuff. This is critical now that we are facing major challenges like environmental damage, energy scarcity and longer life spans. Giving people a financial incentive to invent will help us get out of the mess that we’re in. This has worked very well in some areas. For example, patent protection is the main reason why we have so many good medicines today.
I hope you find this information useful. I’m not a lawyer, so I can’t give you any legal specifics. I understand the gist of how the system works, but the devil is in the details and your patent attorney is the best person to explain that to you. What my site does is to give you an overview of how everything works, so that you have enough information to make the best of your conversations with your attorney.
